The Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) is defined as an area where homes and other developments border or intermix with forests and flammable vegetation. Communities in the WUI are at risk from wildland fire, and their presence creates challenges for homeowners and first responders. Teton County and the Jackson valley have been affected by significant wildfires in recent years: Green Knoll (2001), Horsethief (2012), Cliff Creek (2014), Berry (2016), Museum and Saddle Butte (2019). These fires overwhelmed local initial responders and involved incident support from outside resources and incident management teams. Fortunately, no homes were lost due to any of these local fires. Homeowners must recognize the potential hazards and risks of living in the wildland-urban interface. Community awareness, preparedness, and home resilience are vital components to living with fire in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Teton Wildfire Mitigation Team strives to help create fire-adapted homes - and communities - by understanding the hazards and risks. Our services are for homeowners, homeowners’ associations, commercial properties, government agencies, and communities in Teton County and western Wyoming.
